Bot policy

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. In particular, this policy allows stewards to automatically flag known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests. The policy also enables global bots on this wiki (if this page says that is acceptable), which are trusted bots that will be given bot access on every wiki that allows global bots.

This policy makes bot access requesting much easier for local users, operators, and stewards. To implement it we only need to create a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and add a line at the top noting that it is used here. Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. If you object, please say so; I hope to implement it soon if there is no objection, since it is particularly written to streamline bot requests on wikis with little or no community interested in bot access requests.

Creating the most sought after phrasebooks with the help of a bot, based on the existing English Wikivoyage phrasebooks

Hi again. As I mentioned here before, I am the main editor on the Hebrew Wikivoyage (Have been so for almost five years). Based on my experience, I wanted to suggest the following co-operation project which I am hoping would help bring a lot of interest from Hindi speaking readers to the Hindi Wikivoyage.

Since I have been the only highly active user on the Hebrew Wikivoyage through the last five years, I have developed various techniques to make sure that my contributions have a significant impact over time, and that I focus my attention to the most sought after articles among Hebrew readers, so that my efforts won't go to waste. Over the years it has become very clear that the majority of the readers of the Hebrew Wikivoyage find most value in the phrasebook articles in comparison to the levels of interest in destination articles and other type of articles (the phrasebook articles constantly show up at the top results of our statistics pages every month). Unfortunately, creating good phrasebook articles is a long process... which needs to FIRST involve a lot of copying and pasting (taking content from existing phrasebook articles on the English Wikivoyage), afterwards involves writing transliterations in your language based on the English transliterations that exist in the parallel articles on the English Wikivoyage, and eventually the work would only be completed after an expert in that language volunteers to help finish the work on the phrasebook.

I have noticed that the time consuming and boring process involved in creating good accurate phrasebooks are usually the main reason most of the regular editors on the Hebrew Wikivoyage completely refrain from improving or expanding phrasebook articles (which is a big problem, because most of the time, if a good "foundation" already exists for a given phrasebook, the first native speakers of that language whom find it would be more likely to help correct all mistakes and finish the work - they usually don't do that if the article is almost empty from content or half empty).

Either way... since the main initial creation of most phrasebook articles mostly involve a lot of CTRL+C and CTRL+V (before I get to writing the Hebrew transliterations), and since I am the main person whom is creating the phrasebooks on the Hebrew Wikivoyage, I decided to do two things most other Wikivoyage editions don't do with phrasebook articles - (1) I use tables so that it is easier to paste a lot of content into them (and to review a lot of content) (2) I include the English transliterations column in each phrasebook articles which appears right next to the Hebrew transliterations that I later on create based on the English transliterations.

As you can see in the example above, in some instances the phrasebook articles in Hebvoy have question marks where work is still needed.

Our most wanted/read phrasebook on the Hebrew Wikivoyage is actually the Arabic phrasebook which I believe is used mostly by high school students in Israel whom are learning the language at school (Arabic of course also a very dominant language in Israel and that might also be the reason that many Hebrew speaking Israelis seem to be using the phrasebook on the go at the mobile version of the page instead of the desktop version of that page). The Arabic phrasebook on Hebvoy, which was created by me mostly, is still missing a lot of content and hasn't been significantly improved yet by native speakers of the Arabic language, but still... it is constantly ranked #3 of the most viewed pages of the Hebrew Wikivoyage (1,806 pageviews in the last 30 days).

Me and the user Syced are looking into creating a software that would be able to help the Hindi Wikivoyage (and in the future, many other new Wikivoyage editions as well) generate the initial phrasebook articles for maybe around 30-40 of the most sought after phrasebooks among Hindi speakers, based on the information which is already available on the parallel phrasebook articles on the English Wikivoyage (for example - creating Hindi-Hebrew phrasebook, Hindi-Dutch, Hindi-Arabic, Hindi-Japanese, etc). I am basically trying to save your editors and many editors the hassle of using CTRL+C and CTRL+V over many years just to create the initial "foundation" to each phrasebook. Even though these bot generated articles would initially contain, just like in Hebvoy - tables, an English transliterations column, and question marks wherever data isn't yet available.... I believe that these articles' existence would tremendously help gather a lot of interest from new readers to the Hindi Wikivoyage and would be very useful for editors like me, whom are spending multiple years of their lives copy+pasting content into phrasebook articles from the parallel articles on the English Wikivoyage.

I created the first example of such an article here - French phrasebook. Please change the article's name to the correct name in Hindi + improve the existing content + write all the Hindi transliterations.

A useful page that might help you create the foundation of the Hindi Wikivoyage

I used the pageview statistics of the Hindi Wikipedia to create a list of suggested articles to create on the Hindi Wikivoyage. Innocentbunny जी नमस्कार! आपका इस प्रकल्प पर बहुत स्वागत है। यह विकियात्रा नामक प्रकल्प अभी बिलकुल ही शुरूआती अवस्था में है। अतः आप यदि इसकी तुलना विकिपीडिया से करेंगे तो पायेंगे कि बहुत से साँचे यहाँ उपलब्ध नहीं हैं। यहाँ पन्नों की संख्या भी बहुत कम है और नीतियाँ अभी निर्माण की अवस्था में हैं।

चूँकि यह एक बिलकुल ही नया शुरू हुआ प्रकल्प है, आपको कुछ चीजों का ध्यान भी रखना होगा। यह भी कि यह विकिपीडिया नहीं है, और हर चीज जो हम विकिपीडिया पर देखते हों यहाँ हो भी यह भी आवश्यक नहीं।

• उदाहरण के लिए आपने यह साँचा इस लिए बना दिया क्योंकि आप इसे हिंदी विकिपीडिया पर लगभग हर लेख के वार्ता पन्ने पर देखते हैं। यदि आप अंगरेजी विकियात्रा के पन्नों को देखें तो आप पायेंगे कि वहाँ शायद ही किसी पन्ने पर इस तरह का कोई साँचा लगा हो। इस साँचे में जिन कड़ियों को रखा गया है वे मौजूद ही नहीं हैं, इस तरह इस प्रकार के साँचे का औचित्य ही नहीं रह जाता यदि नीति न मौजूद हो।
• दूसरी बात, जिस वार्ता पन्ने पर कोई चर्चा न हो इस तरह के साँचे लगाए भी नहीं जाने चाहिएँ। कहने का मतलब यह कि यह साँचा अपरिहार्य नहीं है, अंगरेजी विकियात्रा आज तक इसके बिना काम चला रही।
• दूसरी चीज मैंने अन्यत्र चर्चा में देखा जहाँ कोलकाता लेख में लाल कड़ियों पर आपके और स जी के बीच चर्चा हुई थी। आपका प्रयास बहुत ही सराहनीय है कि आपने लेख में सुधार किया, किन्तु अभी इस छोटे प्रकल्प पर कड़ियाँ बनायेंगे तो वे ज्यादातर लाल ही रहेंगी। लाल कड़ियों के कई नुक्सान हैं। न केवल यह देखने में ख़राब लगता, इससे प्रकल्प की गुणवत्ता बुरी तरह प्रभावित होती है। साथ ही इन कड़ियों के अनुसरण में परीक्षण पृष्ठ बनाए जाने की संभावना बढ़ती है। यही कारण है कि हम लोग लाल कड़ियों के साथ पाठ रखने से यथासंभव बचाव कर रहे हैं।
• केवल, लाल कड़ियों को नीला करने के लिए, उन पे छोटे लेख बना दिए जाएँ तो गुणवत्ता के मामले में यह और बुरी स्थिति हो जाती, जहाँ शुरुआत में ही इस प्रकल्प पर भी आधार लेखों का अनुपात बहुत अधिक हो जाएगा। यही कारण है कि इस प्रकल्प पर छोटे नए लेख बनाने को भी हम श्रेयस्कर नहीं मान रहे। नए लेख बनाने से पहले पुराने लेखों को पर्याप्त बड़ा कर रहे। और और नया लेख तभी शुरू कर रहे जब उसे बड़ा बनाने का संकल्प भी हो।

आर्यावर्त जी, जो डिज़ाइन मुझे सबसे अच्छा लगा और साफ लगा, उसे ही मैंने इसमें जोड़ दिया। इस कारण इसे ही बनाया। आप चाहें तो वर्तमान मुखपृष्ठ को देख सकते हैं। उसे देख कर इन दोनों मुखपृष्ठ की तुलना कर लें, यदि कुछ बदलना हो तो सुझाव दे सकते हैं, मैं जल्द ही बदल कर एक विकल्प और डाल दूंगा, ताकि जिसे वह सुझाव अच्छा लगे, वो उस विकल्प को भी चुन सके।

सभी को नमस्कार। रीडर वेब दल ने हाल ही में मोबाइल वेबसाइट पर पृष्ठ समस्या टेम्पलेट्स को उजागर करने पर काम करना शुरू कर दिया है। वर्तमान में पृष्ठ सामग्री वाली समस्याओं के बारे में विवरण आम तौर पर मोबाइल वेबसाइट पर छिपे हुए हैं। इससे पाठक उनके द्वारा पढ़े जाने वाले पृष्ठों की विश्वसनीयता से अनजान रह जाते हैं। इस परियोजना का लक्ष्य मोबाइल वेब पर किसी लेख के भीतर विशेष समस्याओं के बारे में जागरूकता में सुधार करना है। ऐसा हम पृष्ठ समस्याओं के दृश्य स्टाइल को बदलकर करेंगे।

अब तक हमने डिजाइन और कार्यान्वयन पर एक प्रस्ताव तैयार किया है। हम प्रस्तावित डिजाइनों पर उपयोगकर्ता परीक्षण भी कर पाए। अब तक के परीक्षणों के परिणाम सकारात्मक हैं। हमने जो जाना है उसका त्वरित सारांश यहाँ दिया गया है:

• नया तरीका प्रतिभागियों के बीच पृष्ठ समस्याओं के बारे में जागरूकता बढ़ाता है। विशेष रूप से तब जब वे गहन मूल्यांकन/आलोचनात्मक अंदाज़ में हों।
• पृष्ठ समस्याएँ पाठकों को समझ में आती हैं और वे समझते हैं कि ये कैसे काम करते हैं।
• पाठक पृष्ठ समस्याओं के बारे में परवाह करते हैं और उन्हें महत्वपूर्ण मानते हैं।
• विकिपीडिया की पृष्ठ समस्याओं के बारे में सीखने को लेकर पाठकों की भावनाएँ अत्यधिक सकारात्मक थीं।

अंकों में बदलाव

हिन्दी विकियात्रा के सभी लेखों में अरबी अंकों का ही उपयोग किया गया है, और इसके लिस्टिंग में भी स्वतः ही अरबी अंक दिखते हैं। इस कारण हिन्दी विकिपीडिया की तरह इसके अंकों को भी डिफ़ाल्ट में देवनागरी (०-९) से बदल कर अरबी (0-9) कर देना उचित रहेगा। ताकि सभी जगह अंकों में एक रूपता रहे। --स (वार्ता) २२:२१, १९ जुलाई २०१८ (IST)

हिन्दी दिवस लेख प्रतियोगिता

१४ सितंबर को हिन्दी दिवस है और इसे भारत समेत कई देशों में मनाया जाता है। हिन्दी भारत की आधिकारिक राजभाषा भी है। साथ ही पाकिस्तान, बांग्लादेश, नेपाल आदि एशियाई देश एवं मोरिसश जैसे अफ्रीकी देशों में भी हिन्दी बोली जाती है।

हिन्दी भाषा को बढ़ावा मिले और हिन्दी भाषा के एकमेव ऑनलाइन ज्ञानकोष विकिपीडिया के लेखों में गुणवत्ता युक्त लेखों की वृद्धि हो इस हेतु से हिन्दी विकिपीडिया १४ सितंबर से एक माह तक लेख प्रतियोगिता का आयोजन कर रहा है।

हिन्दी की अन्य भगिनी भाषाएँ जैसे बंगाली, गुजराती, मराठी, पंजाबी, मैथिली, भोजपुरी आदि भाषाओं को जानने वाले सदस्य हिन्दी जानते हैं। उर्दू भी हिन्दी की भगिनी भाषा है और उर्दूभाषी सदस्य भी हिन्दी का अच्छा ज्ञान रखते हैं। देखा गया है कि अन्यभाषी सदस्य हिन्दी से अधिक अंग्रेजी विकि में योगदान देते हैं अथवा हिन्दी के दूसरे प्रकल्पों में अधिक सक्रिय हैं। हमारा प्रयास है कि हिन्दी दिवस के इस अवसर पर हम हिन्दी जानने वालें सदस्यों को हिन्दी विकिपीडिया के साथ जुड़ने का अवसर प्रदान करें।

विकिमीडिया आंदोलन रणनीति 2018-20

मेरा नाम रूपिका शर्मा है और मैं विकिमीडिआ फाउंडेशन द्वारा नियुक्त हिंदी भाषा की रणनीति समन्वयक हूँ। अगले कुछ महीने मैं हिंदी भाषा समुदाय के साथ रणनीति प्रक्रिया के बारे में चर्चाएँ करुँगी जो 2030 तक विकिमीडिया परियोजनाओं में होने वाले बदलाव को परिभाषित करेंगी।

2017 में आंदोलन रणनीति प्रक्रिया का पहला चक्र शुरू हुआ था जिसमे हिंदी समुदाय के सदस्यों ने भाग लिया था जिससे हम रणनीतिक दिशा की ओर बढ़ सके और अभी 2018 से 2020 तक दूसरा चक्र चल रहा है। इसमें हम विकिमीडिया की भविष्य की भूमिका को ध्यान में रखते हुए और अपनी संरचनाओं को अद्यतन करने के लिए एक सहयोगी रणनीति विकसित करने के लिए एक व्यापक चर्चा शुरू करेंगे जिससे हम 2030 तक अपनी रणनीतिक दिशा में सफलतापूर्वक आगे बढ़ सकें।

Re-thinking where to put the focus on - the collaborative creation of the "List of articles every Wikivoyage should have" on Meta

One of the issues with any wiki site is that unless the editor community agrees upon where it is mostly important to put most efforts, usually everyone just improves random articles without knowing what to prioritize... this becomes a bigger issue with the smaller communities where if there are only two or three active editors... they would usually create mostly random stubs that aren’t of much interest to their readers, just because most people wouldn’t know on the top of the head what travel destinations are of most interest to people.

In order to tackle this issue, some wiki sites develop a vital/core article list based on the consensus in that community, which could be used both as a way to focus most efforts where they are most needed (for example, by encouarging the editors to make as many Guide articles and Star articles from all the articles on the core articles list) but also as a way to encourage the other parallel editions of that wiki to create the articles deemed to be the most vital articles as well.

I especially like Wikipedia’s vital articles list... but also Meta’s List of articles every Wikipedia should have.

I think that the existence of such a list, that might even be of use here at the Hindi Wikivoyage, would be especially important as it would inspire all the smaller editions of Wikivoyage to make sure that the articles which are of the most interest to their readers are the ones in which most efforts are directed towards + that a priority would be given to improving the quality of the most prominent and sought after articles.

As such I decided to plunge forward and create a draft for this list at Meta. It currently includes exactly 1,000 articles. The list isn't finished! New tools and IP masking

Hey everyone,

The Wikimedia Foundation wants to work on two things that affect how we patrol changes and handle vandalism and harassment. We want to make the tools that are used to handle bad edits better. We also want to get better privacy for unregistered users so their IP addresses are no longer shown to everyone in the world. We would not hide IP addresses until we have better tools for patrolling.

We have an idea of what tools could be working better and how a more limited access to IP addresses would change things, but we need to hear from more wikis. You can read more about the project on Meta and post comments and feedback. Now is when we need to hear from you to be able to give you better tools to handle vandalism, spam and harassment.

नमस्कार! विकिमीडिया आंदोलन रणनीति 2018-20 के लिए मसौदा सिफ़ारिशें (draft recommendations) प्रकाशित हो चुकीं हैं। सिफ़ारिशों को नौ विकिमीडिया कार्यकारी समूहों द्वारा विकसित किया गया है और हमारे आंदोलन के भविष्य के निर्माण में मदद करने के लिए यह एक महत्वपूर्ण उपकरण हैं। यह उन तरीकों पर पहली नज़र डालते हैं, जिनसे हम अपने आंदोलन की संरचनाओं को अपनी सामरिक दिशा में आगे बढ़ने में मदद कर सकते हैं।

The consultation on partial and temporary Foundation bans just started

Hello,

In a recent statement, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees requested that staff hold a consultation to "re-evaluat[e] or add community input to the two new office action policy tools (temporary and partial Foundation bans)".

Accordingly, the Foundation's Trust & Safety team invites all Wikimedians to join this consultation and give their feedback from 30 September to 30 October.

How can you help?

• Suggest how partial and temporary Foundation bans should be used, if they should (eg: On all projects, or only on a subset);

• Give ideas about how partial and temporary Foundation bans should ideally implemented, if they should be; and/or

• Propose changes to the existing Office Actions policy on partial and temporary bans.

Feedback wanted on Desktop Improvements project

नमस्ते. The Readers Web team at the WMF will work on some improvements to the desktop interface over the next couple of years. The goal is to increase usability without removing any functionality. We have been inspired by changes made by volunteers, but that currently only exist as local gadgets and user scripts, prototypes, and volunteer-led skins. We would like to begin the process of bringing some of these changes into the default experience on all Wikimedia projects.

We are currently in the research stage of this project and are looking for ideas for improvements, as well as feedback on our current ideas and mockups. So far, we have performed interviews with community members at Wikimania. We have gathered lists of previous volunteer and WMF work in this area. We are examining possible technical approaches for such changes.

We would like individual feedback on the following:

• Identifying focus areas for the project we have not yet discovered
• Expanding the list of existing gadgets and user scripts that are related to providing a better desktop experience. If you can think of some of these from your wiki, please let us know
• Feedback on the ideas and mockups we have collected so far

We would also like to gather a list of wikis that would be interested in being test wikis for this project - these wikis would be the first to receive the updates once we’re ready to start building.

When giving feedback, please consider the following goals of the project:

• Make it easier for readers to focus on the content
• Provide easier access to everyday actions (e.g. search, language switching, editing)
• Put things in logical and useful places
• Increase consistency in the interface with other platforms - mobile web and the apps
• Eliminate clutter
• Plan for future growth

As well as the following constraints:

• Not touching the content - no work will be done in terms of styling templates or to the structure of page contents themselves
• Not removing any functionality - things might move around, but all navigational items and other functionality currently available by default will remain
• No drastic changes to the layout - we're taking an evolutionary approach to the changes and want the site to continue feeling familiar to readers and editors

The 2020 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on November 11, 2019, or comment on other proposals to help make them better.

This year, we’re exclusively focusing on smaller projects (i.e., Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikivoyage, and Wikinews). We want to help these projects and provide meaningful improvements to diverse communities. If you’re a member of any of these projects, please participate in the survey! Making the Content Translation Tool available for Wikivoyage

I don't know if you all have ever tried Wikipedia's Content translation Tool, but i'll just say that this is a very strong tool that has helped the Wikipedia community translate A LOT of articles between the various Wikipedia editions (mostly translations of articles from the English Wikipedia to the smaller Wikipedia editions).

So far this tool is only used in Wikipedia.

As part of the current Community Wishlist Survey, a suggestion has been brought forward to make this tool available for all Wikivoyage editions as well:

Movement Learning and Leadership Development Project

The Wikimedia Foundation’s Community Development team is seeking to learn more about the way volunteers learn and develop into the many different roles that exist in the movement. Our goal is to build a movement informed framework that provides shared clarity and outlines accessible pathways on how to grow and develop skills within the movement. Since 16 June, the Foundation Brand Team has been running a survey in 7 languages about 3 naming options. There are also community members sharing concerns about renaming in a Community Open Letter.

Our goal in this call for feedback is to hear from across the community, so we encourage you to participate in the survey, the open letter, or both. The survey will go through 7 July in all timezones. Input from the survey and discussions will be analyzed and published on Meta-Wiki.

Announcing a new wiki project! Welcome, Abstract Wikipedia

Hi all,

It is my honor to introduce Abstract Wikipedia, a new project that has been unanimously approved by the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. Abstract Wikipedia proposes a new way to generate baseline encyclopedic content in a multilingual fashion, allowing more contributors and more readers to share more knowledge in more languages. It is an approach that aims to make cross-lingual cooperation easier on our projects, increase the sustainability of our movement through expanding access to participation, improve the user experience for readers of all languages, and innovate in free knowledge by connecting some of the strengths of our movement to create something new.

This is our first new project in over seven years. Abstract Wikipedia was submitted as a project proposal by Denny Vrandečić in May 2020 after years of preparation and research, leading to a detailed plan and lively discussions in the Wikimedia communities. We know that the energy and the creativity of the community often runs up against language barriers, and information that is available in one language may not make it to other language Wikipedias. Abstract Wikipedia intends to look and feel like a Wikipedia, but build on the powerful, language-independent conceptual models of Wikidata, with the goal of letting volunteers create and maintain Wikipedia articles across our polyglot Wikimedia world.

The project will allow volunteers to assemble the fundamentals of an article using words and entities from Wikidata. Because Wikidata uses conceptual models that are meant to be universal across languages, it should be possible to use and extend these building blocks of knowledge to create models for articles that also have universal value. Using code, volunteers will be able to translate these abstract “articles” into their own languages. If successful, this could eventually allow everyone to read about any topic in Wikidata in their own language.

As you can imagine, this work will require a lot of software development, and a lot of cooperation among Wikimedians. In order to make this effort possible, Denny will join the Foundation as a staff member in July and lead this initiative. You may know Denny as the creator of Wikidata, a long-time community member, a former staff member at Wikimedia Deutschland, and a former Trustee at the Wikimedia Foundation . We are very excited that Denny will bring his skills and expertise to work on this project alongside the Foundation’s product, technology, and community liaison teams.

It is important to acknowledge that this is an experimental project, and that every Wikipedia community has different needs. This project may offer some communities great advantages. Other communities may engage less. Every language Wikipedia community will be free to choose and moderate whether or how they would use content from this project.

We are excited that this new wiki-project has the possibility to advance knowledge equity through increased access to knowledge. It also invites us to consider and engage with critical questions about how and by whom knowledge is constructed. We look forward to working in cooperation with the communities to think through these important questions.

There is much to do as we begin designing a plan for Abstract Wikipedia in close collaboration with our communities. Global bot policy proposal: invitation to a Meta discussion

I apologize for sending a message in English. कृपया अपनी भाषा में अनुवादित करने में सहायता करें. According to the list, your wiki project currently is opted in to the global bot policy. Under this policy, bots that fix double redirects or maintain interwiki links are allowed to operate under a global bot flag that is assigned directly by the stewards.

As the Wikimedia projects developed, the need for the current global bot policy decreased, and in the past years, no bots were appointed via that policy. That is mainly given Wikidata were estabilished in 2013, and it is no longer necessary to have dozens of bots that maintain interwiki links.

A proposal was made at Meta-Wiki, which proposes that the stewards will be authorized to determine whether an uncontroversial task may be assigned a global bot flag. The stewards already assign permissions that are more impactful on many wikis, namely, global sysops and global renamers, and I do not think that trust should be an issue. The stewards will assign the permission only to time-proven bots that are already approved at a number of projects, like ListeriaBot.

Wikidata descriptions changes to be included more often in Recent Changes and Watchlist

As you may know, you can include changes coming from Wikidata in your Watchlist and Recent Changes (in your preferences). Until now, this feature didn’t always include changes made on Wikidata descriptions due to the way Wikidata tracks the data used in a given article.

Starting on December 3rd, the Watchlist and Recent Changes will include changes on the descriptions of Wikidata Items that are used in the pages that you watch. This will only include descriptions in the language of your wiki to make sure that you’re only seeing changes that are relevant to your wiki.

This improvement was requested by many users from different projects. We hope that it can help you monitor the changes on Wikidata descriptions that affect your wiki and participate in the effort of improving the data quality on Wikidata for all Wikimedia wikis and beyond.

Note: if you didn’t use the Wikidata watchlist integration feature for a long time, feel free to give it another chance! The feature has been improved since the beginning and the content it displays is more precise and useful than at the beginning of the feature in 2015.

Project Grant Open Call

This is the announcement for the Project Grants program open call that started on January 11, with the submission deadline of February 10, 2021.
This first open call will be focussed on Community Organizing proposals. A second open call focused on research and software proposals is scheduled from February 15 with a submission deadline of March 16, 2021.

For the Round 1 open call, we invite you to propose grant applications that fall under community development and organizing (offline and online) categories. Project Grant funds are available to support individuals, groups, and organizations to implement new experiments and proven ideas, from organizing a better process on your wiki, coordinating a campaign or editathon series to providing other support for community building. We offer the following resources to help you plan your project and complete a grant proposal:

Call for feedback: WMF Community Board seats & Office hours tomorrow

Dear Wikimedians,

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. Below you will find the problem statement and various ideas from the Board to address it. We are offering multiple channels for questions and feedback. With the help of a team of community facilitators, we are organizing multiple conversations with multiple groups in multiple languages.

During this call for feedback we publish weekly reports and we draft the final report that will be delivered to the Board. With the help of this report, the Board will approve the next steps to organize the selection of six community seats in the upcoming months. Three of these seats are due for renewal and three are new, recently approved.

Participate in this call for feedback and help us form a more diverse and better performing Board of Trustees!

Problems: While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. This problem was identified in the Board’s 2019 governance review, along with recommendations for how to address it.

To solve the problem of capacity, we have agreed to increase the Board size to a maximum of 16 trustees (it was 10). Regarding performance and diversity, we have approved criteria to evaluate new Board candidates. What is missing is a process to promote community candidates that represent the diversity of our movement and have the skills and experience to perform well on the Board of a complex global organization.

Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. Meanwhile, our movement has grown larger and more complex, our technical and strategic needs have increased, and we have new and more difficult policy challenges around the globe. As well, our Movement Strategy recommendations urge us to increase our diversity and promote perspectives from other regions and other social backgrounds.

In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. What process can we all design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees?

Ideas: The Board has discussed several ideas to overcome the problems mentioned above. Some of these ideas could be taken and combined, and some discarded. Other ideas coming from the call for feedback could be considered as well. The ideas are:

• Ranked voting system. Complete the move to a single transferable vote system, already used to appoint affiliate-selected seats, which is designed to best capture voters’ preferences.
• Quotas. Explore the possibility of introducing quotas to ensure certain types of diversity in the Board (details about these quotas to be discussed in this call for feedback).
• Call for types of skills and experiences. When the Board makes a new call for candidates, they would specify types of skills and experiences especially sought.
• Vetting of candidates. Potential candidates would be assessed using the Trustee Evaluation Form and would be confirmed or not as eligible candidates.
• Board-delegated selection committee. The community would nominate candidates that this committee would assess and rank using the Trustee Evaluation Form. This committee would have community elected members and Board appointed members.
• Community-elected selection committee. The community would directly elect the committee members. The committee would assess and rank candidates using the Trustee Evaluation Form.
• Election of confirmed candidates. The community would vote for community nominated candidates that have been assessed and ranked using the Trustee Evaluation Form. The Board would appoint the most voted candidates.
• Direct appointment of confirmed candidates. After the selection committee produces a ranked list of community nominated candidates, the Board would appoint the top-ranked candidates directly.

Call for feedback: The call for feedback runs from February 1 until the end of March 14. We are looking for a broad representation of opinions. We are interested in the reasoning and the feelings behind your opinions. In a conversation like this one, details are important. We want to support good conversations where everyone can share and learn from others. We want to hear from those who understand Wikimedia governance well and are already active in movement conversations. We also want to hear from people who do not usually contribute to discussions. Especially those who are active in their own roles, topics, languages or regions, but usually not in, say, a call for feedback on Meta.

You can participate by joining the Telegram chat group, and giving feedback on any of the talk pages on Meta-Wiki. We are welcoming the organisation of conversations in any language and in any channel. If you want us to organize a conversation or a meeting for your wiki project or your affiliate, please write to me. I will also reach out to communities and affiliates to soon have focused group discussions.

WMF Community Board seats: Upcoming panel discussions

As a result of the first three weeks of the call for feedback on WMF Community Board seats, three topics turned out to be the focus of the discussion. Additionally, a new idea has been introduced by a community member recently: Candidates resources. We would like to pursue these focus topics and the new idea appropriately, discussing them in depth and collecting new ideas and fresh approaches by running four panels in the next week. Every panel includes four members from the movement covering many regions, backgrounds and experiences, along with a trustee of the Board. Every panel will last 45 minutes, followed by a 45-minute open mic discussion, where everyone’s free to ask questions or to contribute to the further development of the panel's topics.

Drafting Committee: Call for applications

The Wikimedia Foundation is recruiting volunteers to join a committee to draft how to make the code enforceable. Volunteers on the committee will commit between 2 and 6 hours per week from late April through July and again in October and November. 2021 community consultations: Notice and call for volunteers / translators

From 5 April – 5 May 2021 there will be conversations on many Wikimedia projects about how to enforce the UCoC. We are looking for volunteers to translate key material, as well as to help host consultations on their own languages or projects using suggested key questions. If you are interested in volunteering for either of these roles, please contact us in whatever language you are most comfortable.

Global bot policy changes

I apologize for sending a message in English. कृपया अपनी भाषा में अनुवादित करने में सहायता करें. According to the list, your wiki project is currently opted in to the global bot policy. As such, I want to let you know about some changes that were made after the global RfC was closed.

• Global bots are now subject to a 2 week discussion, and it'll be publicized via a MassMessage list, available at Bot policy/New global bot discussion on Meta. Please subscribe yourself or your wiki if you are interested in new global bots proposals.
• For a bot to be considered for approval, it must demonstrate it is welcomed in multiple projects, and a good way to do that is to have the bot flag on at least 5 wikis for a single task.
• The bot operator should make sure to adhere to the wiki's preference as related to the use of the bot flag (i.e., if a wiki doesn't want a bot to use the flag as it edits, that should be followed).

[Small wiki toolkits] Workshop on "Designing responsive main pages" - 30 April (Friday)

As part of the Small wiki toolkits (South Asia) initiative, we would like to announce the third workshop of this year on “Designing responsive main pages”. The workshop will take place on 30 April (Friday). During this workshop, we will learn to design main pages of a wiki to be responsive. This will allow the pages to be mobile-friendly, by adjusting the width and the height according to various screen sizes. Participants are expected to have a good understanding of Wikitext/markup and optionally basic CSS.

Call for Election Volunteers: 2021 WMF Board elections

Hello all,

Based on an extensive call for feedback earlier this year, the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees announced the plan for the 2021 Board elections. Apart from improving the technicalities of the process, the Board is also keen on improving active participation from communities in the election process. During the last elections, Voter turnout in prior elections was about 10% globally. It was better in communities with volunteer election support. Some of those communities reached over 20% voter turnout. We know we can get more voters to help assess and promote the best candidates, but to do that, we need your help.

We are looking for volunteers to serve as Election Volunteers. Election Volunteers should have a good understanding of their communities. The facilitation team sees Election Volunteers as doing the following:

• Promote the election and related calls to action in community channels.
• With the support from facilitators, organize discussions about the election in their communities.
• Translate “a few” messages for their communities

Wikimania 2021: Individual Program Submissions

Dear all,

Wikimania 2021 will be hosted virtually for the first time in the event's 15-year history. Since there is no in-person host, the event is being organized by a diverse group of Wikimedia volunteers that form the Core Organizing Team (COT) for Wikimania 2021.

Event Program - Individuals or a group of individuals can submit their session proposals to be a part of the program. There will be translation support for sessions provided in a number of languages. See more information here.

Candidates from South Asia for 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections

Dear Wikimedians,

As you may be aware, the Wikimedia Foundation has started elections for community seats on the Board of Trustees. While previously there were three community seats on the Board, with the expansion of the Board to sixteen seats last year, community seats have been increased to eight, four of which are up for election this year.

In the last fifteen years of the Board's history, there were only a few candidates from the South Asian region who participated in the elections, and hardly anyone from the community had a chance to serve on the Board. While there are several reasons for this, this time, the Board and WMF are very keen on encouraging and providing support to potential candidates from historically underrepresented regions. This is a good chance to change the historical problem of representation from the South Asian region in high-level governance structures.

Ten days after the call for candidates began, there aren't any candidates from South Asia yet, there are still 10 days left! I would like to ask community members to encourage other community members, whom you think would be potential candidates for the Board. While the final decision is completely up to the person, it can be helpful to make sure that they are aware of the election and the call for candidates.

Editing news 2021 #2

When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. (Source)

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

• Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
• The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

Looking ahead

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "चर्चा उपकरण" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

[Wikimedia Foundation elections 2021] Candidates meet with South Asia + ESEAP communities

Dear Wikimedians,

As you may already know, the 2021 Board of Trustees elections are from 4 August 2021 to 17 August 2021. Members of the Wikimedia community have the opportunity to elect four candidates to a three-year term.

After a three-week-long Call for Candidates, there are 20 candidates for the 2021 election. This event is for community members of South Asian and ESEAP communities to know the candidates and interact with them.

• The event will be on 31 July 2021 (Saturday), and the timings are:

2021 WMF Board election postponed until August 18th

Hello all,

We are reaching out to you today regarding the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election. This election was due to open on August 4th. Due to some technical issues with SecurePoll, the election must be delayed by two weeks. This means we plan to launch the election on August 18th, which is the day after Wikimania concludes. We are truly sorry for this delay and hope that we will get back on schedule on August 18th. We are in touch with the Elections Committee and the candidates to coordinate the next steps. We will update the Board election Talk page and Telegram channel as we know more.

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Election is open: 18 - 31 August 2021

Voting for the 2021 Board of Trustees election is now open. Candidates from the community were asked to submit their candidacy. After a three-week-long Call for Candidates, there are 19 candidates for the 2021 election.

The Wikimedia movement has the opportunity to vote for the selection of community and affiliate trustees. By voting, you will help to identify those people who have the qualities to best serve the needs of the movement for the next several years. The Board is expected to select the four most voted candidates to serve as trustees. Voting closes 31 August 2021.

Universal Code of Conduct - Enforcement draft guidelines review

The Universal Code of Conduct Phase 2 drafting committee would like comments about the enforcement draft guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC). This review period is planned for 17 August 2021 through 17 October 2021.

These guidelines are not final but you can help move the progress forward. The committee will revise the guidelines based upon community input.

Comments can be shared in any language on the draft review talk page and multiple other venues. Community members are encouraged to organize conversations in their communities.

There are planned live discussions about the UCoC enforcement draft guidelines:

The 2022 Community Wishlist Survey will happen in January

Hello everyone,

We hope all of you are as well and safe as possible during these trying times! We wanted to share some news about a change to the Community Wishlist Survey 2022. We would like to hear your opinions as well.

Summary:

We will be running the Community Wishlist Survey 2022 in January 2022. We need more time to work on the 2021 wishes. We also need time to prepare some changes to the Wishlist 2022. In the meantime, you can use a dedicated sandbox to leave early ideas for the 2022 wishes.

Proposing and wish-fulfillment will happen during the same year

In the past, the Community Tech team has run the Community Wishlist Survey for the following year in November of the prior year. For example, we ran the Wishlist for 2021 in November 2020. That worked well a few years ago. At that time, we used to start working on the Wishlist soon after the results of the voting were published.

However, in 2021, there was a delay between the voting and the time when we could start working on the new wishes. Until July 2021, we were working on wishes from the Wishlist for 2020.

We hope having the Wishlist 2022 in January 2022 will be more intuitive. This will also give us time to fulfill more wishes from the 2021 Wishlist.

Encouraging wider participation from historically excluded communities

We are thinking how to make the Wishlist easier to participate in. We want to support more translations, and encourage under-resourced communities to be more active. We would like to have some time to make these changes.

A new space to talk to us about priorities and wishes not granted yet

We will have gone 365 days without a Wishlist. We encourage you to approach us. We hope to hear from you in the talk page, but we also hope to see you at our bi-monthly Talk to Us meetings! These will be hosted at two different times friendly to time zones around the globe.

We will begin our first meeting September 15th at 23:00 UTC. More details about the agenda and format coming soon!

Brainstorm and draft proposals before the proposal phase

If you have early ideas for wishes, you can use the new Community Wishlist Survey sandbox. This way, you will not forget about these before January 2022. You will be able to come back and refine your ideas. Remember, edits in the sandbox don't count as wishes!

Results of 2021 Wikimedia Foundation elections

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2021 Board election. The Elections Committee has reviewed the votes of the 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election, organized to select four new trustees. A record 6,873 people from across 214 projects cast their valid votes. The following four candidates received the most support:

• Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight
• Victoria Doronina
• Dariusz Jemielniak
• Lorenzo Losa

While these candidates have been ranked through the community vote, they are not yet appointed to the Board of Trustees. They still need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. The Board has set a tentative date to appoint new trustees at the end of this month.
